Good exposition was most important.
Otherwise the bottle could have been
drawn between the ridges.
It looks like the job was aborted mid-way
some strokes above the red band.
In 1872 in Alger, the GRAS brothers (born in Spain) started to sell an apéritif based on an old family recipe. Soon the anisette GRAS became very popular under the French in their colony.
Our spotter, M. Jullien remembers his time in service during the Algerian war:
When we were free from duty, we savoured our time on the terraces with a
glas of Anisette Gras on our side.
Reposado
means that the Mezcal could rest for at
least two months in wooden barrels.
con gusano
means that the bottle
contains a worm which lives inside the Agava plant.
The gusano is a caterpillar of a moth; two species actually.
+ The red gusano (chinicuil, Hypopta agavis) crawles inside the
stem of the Agave (that's the one you'll prefer in the bottle).
+ The white gusano (ocuilin, Acentrocneme hesperiaris) lives in the leaves
and works its way to the heart of the plant. This caterpillar can reach 7 cm
and is considered delicious fried in olive oil.
