Mills in Altoaragón

Quicena - Molino Palacín

The Molino Palacín of Quicena is probably best approached from the north side of the village of Tierz. Coming from the north (N-240) there are two roundabouts. About halfway between the two a dirt road heads of to the west. After roughly 300 meters the road turns to the right and reaches the old mill after about 50 meters more.

(1) The former mill.

The mill is a huge building of three layers with many windows. Nobody was around and I therefore could not enter or ask information, and I consider it unlikely that there is anything left of the former business. The only information that I could find about its history tells that the mill witnessed fierce confrontations during the civil war. Photos from that time show how the stairs on the south facade (3) led down on both sides of the center.
It is not clear what type of mill this was (grain or olives). The waterworks are reminiscent of a grain mill, but the rolling stone in front of the building, now serving as a table (8), suggests an oil mill. The old-fashioned insulators (9) on a side building are reminiscent of a power plant. Some maps show lines leading to the building, but it's unclear whether the mill was a user or a producer.

(2) Two cárcavos
Note that the right arch
doesn't fit under the building.

(4) Some kind of a drain.
(5) Relief drain of the canal

(6) Cárcavo left is dry and empty; the one at right is wet (I couldn't tell is there was a wheel).

(7) Cárcavo left is empty and closed with a wooden grate.

(8) Edge stone ∅ 160 cm (top) – 150 cm (bottom).
(9) Insulators on the adjacent building.

(10) Overview of the complex; mill is at the back (red window).
