Mills in Alto Aragón - harinero

Campo

Campo is a town in the Ribagorza county and should be on any map of the region. Probably most rewarding — though not the shortest way — is to approach the mill via the path following the tracé of its former canal. Find the first aid post of the Cruz Roja Española along the main road (N–260 towards Benasque). Next to this building a narrow street leaves the main road and runs toward the river. It is known as the Camino del Río or Cam. del Molino. The street will soon become a path which turns left (to the South). After about 500 m you'll reach the remains of the mill.

The building of the former mill, known as the molino viejo, the old mill, is an empty skeleton with only the outer walls still standing. The walls show scars from many renovations and are in very poor condition.
The construction consists of two volumes. The first part (front left in 1, 2) covers about 1/3 of the whole. The second part (3, 4) where the actual mill was situated, the rest. Both sections, which have no internal connection, had two floors (4).

The section where the mill was situated — deduced from the position of the cárcavo (5) — has its entrance (left in 4) in the wall facing the South (3). Apart from one single window (3) there are no other openings at the ground floor.

The roof and upper floor have collapsed (4) and the floor is difficult to navigate due to rubble, and crisscrossing beams mixed with Ivy and other vegetation.

We could not find any remains of equipment from the milling, or other, activities. This is not really a surprise since the activities of the molino viejo were transferred to the newly built molino nuevo in the 1920s already, on the site of what is now the Red Cross first aid post.

(5) Cárcavo.

The cárcavo is still in a rather good shape, deep and narrow. About halfway the cárcavo is closed off by a wall. Behind this wall we can look all the way to the back of the water house. Here too, nothing remains of the former activities. From what we can discern, we do have the impression that the mill used to be equipped with a turbine.
