Mills in Altoaragón – harinero

San Juan
(Toledo de la Nata)

San Juan of Toledo de la Nata is situated in La Fueva (East of L'Ainsa, Sobrarbe). From L'Ainsa take the main road to Campo (N-260). After Fuendecampo turn left for Atiart. Once there drive a little further for the first crossroads. Drop your vehicle. Now walk the gravel road to the left (to the West). After about 1100–1200m keep to the branch to the right. After about 900m more you'll reach a water bassin. Continue for another 300m; you are now ca. 2300m away from the beginning of the gravel road. From now on look carefully to the left and try to spot yellowish walls of the mill (1) between the vegetation.

(1) The mill and its pond.

This is a small mill consisting of a single small room, similar to other small mills south of the Sierra Ferrera. As at La Cabezonada, the wheel and the tentering mechanism for adjusting the millstone (7-12) are still made of wood. The cárcavo (6, 7) is in good shape, but the rest of the mill has severely deteriorated.
The roof has collapsed (13) , and unfortunately, most of the debris lies exactly where the millstone assembly stood. As a result, we were unable to gather any details about the stones. We could only see that the bancada was very low and built of natural stone.

The walls were in such poor condition that we could no longer tell whether there was any writing on them, as was the case in many places. We were, however, able to make out a few engravings on the outer face of the door (15, 16).
There were also some writings in pencil. Difficult to decipher, but we did recognize a few calculations and perhaps the names of individuals as well. We could not spot any of the usual engravings (such as crosses) around the entrance.
